Look, I'm not gonna tell you some perfect origin story about how everything fell into place. Starting Obsidrix Ascendant was messy, exhausting, and honestly kinda terrifying. But it was also the best decision I ever made.
Started out in a tiny garage off Commercial Drive with basically nothing but my tools and a beat-up '98 Civic that I'd rebuilt three times over. I'd spent years working at dealerships and high-end shops around Vancouver, watching them treat incredible machines like they were on an assembly line. There had to be a better way, y'know?
Those first few months were rough - living off instant ramen, sleeping on a cot in the back office. But word started spreading about this guy who actually gave a damn about getting it right.
Got a call from someone who'd heard about my work through a friend of a friend. They had a '67 Porsche 911 that three other shops had butchered trying to restore. Took me four months, but when we fired that engine up... man, that sound. The owner cried. I'm not ashamed to say I got a little misty too.
That car ended up in a local show and suddenly I wasn't scrambling for work anymore. Hired Marcus around this time - he's still here busting his butt every day.
Finally outgrew that cramped garage. Found this beauty of a space on Granville - way more room, proper lifts, actual ventilation. We could finally take on the bigger projects I'd been dreaming about.
Brought Sarah on board that year too. She'd been doing performance tuning over in Richmond and her knowledge of European engines is honestly ridiculous. We started getting serious about high-performance builds.
The automotive world was changing fast - hybrids, full electrics, all these new technologies. Instead of fighting it, we dove in headfirst. Got certified in EV systems, brought in specialized diagnostic equipment.
Some old-school guys thought I was crazy, but I see it differently. Whether it's a classic V8 or an electric motor, it's still about precision, care, and understanding what makes these machines tick.
Added our paint and body division with Jake leading the charge. Now we could handle complete restorations in-house without farming out work to other shops. Quality control became way easier when we controlled every step.
Started working with some serious collectors and performance enthusiasts. The kind of folks who know their stuff and expect perfection. That's when you know you've made it - when the real car people trust you with their babies.
We've got an amazing team now - eight people who genuinely love what they do. Every single day brings something new, whether it's a vintage restoration that needs research or a modern supercar with tech we're figuring out for the first time.
The mission hasn't changed since that cramped garage back in 2014: treat every vehicle like it's our own, never cut corners, and remember that these aren't just machines - they're somebody's passion, their investment, their joy. We get that, and we take it seriously.
Come by sometime and see what we're working on. We love talking shop almost as much as we love turning wrenches.
Whether it's routine maintenance or a full ground-up restoration, we'd love to hear about it. No job's too big or too small if it means working on something cool.
